Here's just something I found interesting.
Now concentrate on the black dot at the centre of the flag for around 1 minute. Blink and look at a white surface.
Have fun!

Psychology is interesting huh? It even covers this. This phenomena has something to do with the cones in the eye or something like that right?

Well Chris, I don't really feel like revisiting that place anytime soon. Once is more than enough, even the last time I was dragged along.

Daenielle,
Yeap plenty interesting. And yes, you're right about the cones thing.

Here's what i gather from my psyc text book, if you really wanted to know about this phenomenon in greater detail.

It occurs because activity in the retina continues even when you are no longer staring at the original picture. According to the opponent-process theory of color vision, receptor cells are linked in pairs with it's opposing color. Now when looking at the flag for sometime, the receptors stimulated by the colors of the flag become fatigued and when we look at a white surface, the white surface would stimulate all the receptors equally. However, the receptors sensetive to the colors of the flag are already fatigued and so we only see the counter colors of the flag.
